Aristotle is attributed with stating ‘the whole is greater than the sum of the parts’, thereby defining synergy for us. It is a fitting description for Frewer Engineering, and since the business was established in 2003 it has supplied advanced engineering design and analysis consultancy services to customers requiring innovative and creative solutions in many technically challenging industries. Its aim, to match its creative 3D CAD design capabilities with advanced finite element analysis skills, in order to provide high quality solutions to customers’ requirements.
Based in Dorking, Surrey, Frewer Engineering initially supported satellite structures, carbon fibre structures and aero engine development design. Today, its customer base has grown significantly, and the company has expanded its capabilities to service a much wider range of markets.
Continuous business growth has provided the ability to resource increasingly large customer project requirements. “We are recognised by our customers for providing a professional, yet personal service while delivering advanced engineering solutions,” explains the recently appointed head of composite developments, Matthew Jeffreys.
He spent 25 years as a design engineer with McLaren Formula One from 1980 to 2005, winning nine Drivers’ Championships and seven Constructors’ Championships, supporting racing legends including Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Mika Häkkinen, Gerhard Berger and David Coulthard. So, Matthew Jeffreys knows a thing or two about team work and synergy.
He says: “I see a very similar team approach here at Frewer Engineering that was so evident during those championship years at McLaren. The whole team has more of a ‘family feel’, and our customers benefit from the shared goal of continuously striving for improvements.”

“We develop creative design solutions from conceptual modelling and sketching, through to detailed 3D CAD geometry and engineering drawings for manufacture. We offer a bespoke engineering service for unique projects that demand advanced technical skills coupled with experienced engineers,” explains Matthew Jeffreys.
He continues: “Our strength is in solving unusual and, more often than not, very challenging engineering problems with innovative solutions that require both design and stress analysis capabilities. Frewer Engineering provides a creative and advanced design and structural analysis service to most of the world’s most demanding customers. This includes end products and functional testing equipment for aerospace; marine; wind and gas turbine power generation; land, sea and air defence, as well as research and development projects.
For the aerospace industry, the company specialises in lightweight structures and assemblies in both metallics and carbon composite materials. “Our engineers have considerable experience in the supply of aerospace engineering consultancy across a wide range of requirements from critical class A components to supporting research & development equipment,” Matthew Jeffreys says.
His new role with Frewer Engineering will encompass building upon the existing support provided to a wide range of customers in the composites sector. He adds: “We have extensive experience in the design of carbon, glass & aramid composite structures and have well proven links with a variety of composite component manufacturers.
“Performing 3D CAD Design and Finite Element Analysis of specialised structures and assemblies is one of our key strengths. This along with our agility to take on complex multi-disciplined projects and manage turnkey solutions for our customers provides a bespoke service that achieves fast results as we capitalise on our small company size to give a personal service.”
The Gas Turbine market has always been at the forefront at Frewer Engineering and today the company provides turnkey engineering consultancy services to aero-engine, power and marine gas turbine customers.
“We employ advanced engineering design and analysis techniques to ensure our customers’ equipment is at the forefront of gas turbine engineering technology. Essentially, our consultancy service supports our customers by providing a research & development design service, allowing them to concentrate on the end product for entry into service,” Matthew Jeffreys states.
